Client System for the Provision of Psychosocial Care and Support Services (Based on National PSS Guidelines)

Six key components for the Provision of Psychosocial Care and Support Services

  • Community

  • National system.

Client level

  • A client is, and should always be at the center of the PSS service provision process
  • Avoid blaming the client for his or her situation
  • Design PSS intervention plan that addresses the uniqueness of each client –no one size fits-all
  • Actively engage the client in identifying his or her PSS needs/problems and solutions
  • Provide relevant information to a client that will help him or her make informed decisions
  • Begin your PSS intervention from where a client is –start first with the client’s areas of strengths and address the weaknesses later.

Family level

  • Work closely with client’s family and utilize the available potentials in the family in serving the client
  • Coordinate role-performances by family members
  • Support the family to identify PSS needs of the client and assist them access appropriate PSS referral services within or outside the community
  • Advice the family to accept the situation of the client without being judgmental
  • Encourage continuity of PSS not only at the point of service delivery but also at the family level through the gender sensitive culturally appropriate coping mechanisms

Community level

  • Use available gender sensitive community based programs to improve care, support and protection of clients
  • Engage clients in community support groups –small income generating activities and/or social groups for recreational purposes
  • Use available social clubs to support client’s healthy relationships with peers
  • Advice and refer potential clients to appropriate PSS service facility within the community
  • Identify culturally appropriate activities and encourage clients to participate in order to establish a sense of belonging to their own society.

Note: In the COVID 19 context, ensure all COVID 19 safety measures are taken into consideration. Eg. Some social gatherings might be prohibited to prevent spread of COVID 19.

Service Point Level

  • Supervise the provision of psychosocial care and support services in communities and provide technical guidance where necessary.
  • Provide advice on referral cases that require more advanced psychosocial care and support or medical attention
  • Attend referral cases directed to service point and where necessary provide referrals to appropriate service point (s).
  • Document and follow up the referral cases to ensure that it is properly attended and feedback are provided to psychosocial care and support services providers.

National level

  • Provide technical guidance for proper interpretation and implementation of national PSS guidelines
  • Ensure that the provision of Psychosocial Care and Support services are of the required standards as directed by this guidelines
  • Ensure effective utilization of the established referral systems and structures in the community Advocate for resources mobilization to facilitate effective implementation of this guidelines
  • Follow up implementation of this guidelines and provide feedback for continuous improvement of provision of psychosocial care and support services
